Things To Avoid When Cleaning Your Northern Virginia Deck
Homeowners throughout Northern Virginia clean their deck as part of the annual spring outdoor maintenance routine, and while deck washing is always a good idea, some ideas may sound good in deck washing theory, but are not so good choices in deck washing reality. Follow these tips to avoid causing damage to your Northern Virginia deck.
- Choose the right cleaning product for the job. Rather than simply using whatever household cleaner you have available at the time, take the time to purchase the right product for the deck cleaning job. Find a deck washing product that is suitable to your deck and the materials used in its construction, and always follow the manufacturer's guidelines. Deck washing products are available to remove mold and mildew, or stains from mold and mildew, as well as for general cleaning purposes. Remember, you goal is to clean the deck, not damage the deck. After cleaning the deck, ensure all cleaning product is removed from the surface by thoroughly rinsing the deck until no evidence remains.
- Never use a power washer for deck washing unless you are certain it will not damage the wood or composite material. Even though the pressure washing, or power washing, commercials on television make it appear the more water pressure you use the better the results will be, that is not true. Using a pressure washer that holds too much power will wreak havoc on your deck and will probably result in you replacing deck boards rather than simply cleaning them.
- When deck washing, always use scrub brushes in the same direction as the wood grain. Going against the wood grain typically results in unnecessary damage to the wood and again, means you will be replacing or repairing deck boards. Deck washing should not damage your deck surface, regardless of who completes the project.
